SAVANNAH, Ga., Sept. 5, 2017 /PRNewswire/ The Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) is pleased to announce the publication of SCAD: The Architecture of a University. The exquisite 360-page volume, complete with more than 200 archival and beautifully styled photographs, includes editorial contributions from SCAD President and Founder Paula Wallace, interior designer and SCAD alumnus Chuck Chewning, and Margaret Russell, editor-in-chief for Galerie, former editor-in-chief for Architectural Digest and Elle Dcor, and the honorary dean of the SCAD School of Building Arts.

Published with Assouline on the occasion of the university's forthcoming 40th anniversary, SCAD: The Architecture of a University reveals the resplendent design and perennial charm of SCAD's built environment, and celebrates the rich history and enduring legacy of the world's most revered art and design university. Remarkably detailed narratives illuminate the storied pasts of 40 of the university's architectural treasures across its four global locations from its flagship Poetter Hall in Savannah, to majestic Ivy Hall in Atlanta, to bucolic Maison Basse in Lacoste, France, to the noble North Kowloon Magistracy Building in Hong Kong and outline SCAD's meticulous care in artfully conserving each unique structure. A retrospective history section spanning nearly four decades recounts the university's important milestones and signature celebrations.

"SCAD comprises a menagerie of extraordinary historic buildings," says Wallace. "Together these properties form a global exhibition, an epic work of art curated on an international scale. SCAD: The Architecture of a University is our grand exhibition guide, a key to the places, spaces and events that have shaped SCAD into the world's preeminent source of knowledge in every discipline we teach."

Historic preservation has been a prominent part of the university's identity since Wallace founded SCAD in 1978. The university has redeemed and revitalized more than 100 buildings on three continents, with the award-winning SCAD Museum of Art as one of its most extensive adaptive reuse projects to date. Under Wallace's adept leadership, SCAD has been honored for its design and conservation efforts by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the American Institute of Architects, and the Institute of Classical Architecture and Art, among many others.

"Paula Wallace launched SCAD with a mission to prepare students for careers, and she has created, with an ever-expanding, ever-impressive roster of brilliant colleagues, an international university that is admired across the globe for its virtuosity, ingenuity and verve," says Margaret Russell. "This remarkable book is a celebration of SCAD's innovative new architecture and restorative reuse of historic buildings around the world."

SCAD: The Architecture of a University is the second publication SCAD has produced with Assouline, the first of which was Wallace's memoir, The Bee and the Acorn, published in April 2016. Both books are available at Assouline boutiques, shopSCAD, and online at assouline.com, shopscad.com and Amazon.com.
