MCBRIDE, British Columbia - According to the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance, bipolar disorder affects approximately 5.7 million adult Americans. This disease not only affects those diagnosed with it, but also families and partners of the afflicted. Author S.C. Ryder explores her own relationship with a bipolar man in her new memoir, "Miracles, Moons, and Madness" (published by Archway Publishing).
When Ryder first met Nick, she immediately fell in love with his good looks and outlook on life. They started a nine-year relationship which saw them move to a primitive house on farmland in northern Canada. Nick, unbeknownst to Ryder, was hiding a secret that would rock their relationship to its core. Nick suffered from an undiagnosed mental disorder.
Ryder details the changes in Nick's personality. She shows how his personality soon turned to physical aggression. Ryder and Nick begin a desperate quest to find out what was causing this change. Their journey is tumultuous as they battle misdiagnoses, wrong medications and inadequate therapy.
An excerpt from "Miracles, Moons, and Madness":
"When I came back I couldn't find Nick. I started to make breakfast and still he didn't come in. Finally I decided I had better look for him. As I grabbed my coat from the door I saw one of the guns missing from the rack. I felt cold and sick inside. I dropped my coat and ran outside in the direction of the place he had told me he had been going to do it before. As I passed the barn, there he was sitting on the ground bracing the rifle butt and he had the barrel beside his chin."
Ryder says the purpose of writing this book was to help others in similar situations. Throughout the book, she details how earlier intervention and proper therapy could've made a difference. She shows with love and family support and the correct medical attention, bipolar disorder and other mental illnesses are not the end of the world.
