In "On the Other Side of the Ocean" (published by Trafford Publishing), the new book from author Ruth Elisabeth Schoch, readers will discover an insightful look into life on the German-Switzerland border during World War II.
"On the Other Side of the Ocean" focuses on Schoch's early life and details many of the oft-overlooked facets of everyday life: what kind of clothes she and her friends wore, what types of food they ate and the interesting schools they attended.
An excerpt from "On the Other Side of the Ocean":
"As the Moment approached, Mamie talked to him, soothingly and calmly, so he wouldn't be afraid. His breathing slowed to a final gasp, his ravaged face softening into a faint smile. And during those last moments on earth, Mamie had laid her face upon his, praying softly into his passing."
Schoch's book has been described as "a fascinating introduction into another culture." She accomplishes this fascination by looking at the complete picture of her childhood, not just glossing over its negatives. She includes accounts of homesickness, embarrassment and loss. She discusses her alcoholic father, and even her eventual divorce after arriving in the United States.
