In Rune Marie Nielsen's new novel, "Yoshi's Paintbrush: Lessons in Nonconformity" (published by AuthorHouse), readers meet the artistic Yoshi, a 12-year-old ninja wannabe with a big imagination and a thirst for adventure.

While painting a picture of a dog one afternoon, Yoshi waves her paintbrush, and magically, her painting comes to life. The dog introduces herself as Zippy, a shape-shifting dog who is both quirky and terribly clever.

Together, Yoshi and Zippy take a trip through the many layers of Yoshi's subconscious, travelling through different dimensions and realities where Yoshi's name changes to Joshi. Along the way, the pair encounters a talking bamboo plant, time travelling toilets and plenty of mischief as Yoshi discovers who she truly is on the inside.

Nielsen wrote the novel with a graphic novel-writing style in mind. Each chapter finishes with an illustration to better depict the events that happened in the chapter.

"This book is meant to revitalize an appreciation for the imagination and creativity while inspiring readers to take action in making their dreams come true," Nielsen writes. "Normal life doesn't have to be boring and normal."

An excerpt from "Yoshi's Paintbrush":

"'Zippy, tell me how I can get back to who I was!'
'Why are you so impatient?' Zippy laughed. 'Wait and see.'
'I'm waiting as fast as I can,' Joshi told her. Zippy didn't look the least bit worried.
'You are who you were, because you're you.'"
