Leading independent eBook publisher RosettaBooks has announced the first-time digital release of Gerald Clarke's 1988 biography of Truman Capote.

Truman Capote achieved the heights of literary success at a young age only to plunge into self-despair later in life. Capote enjoyed the controversy he often created while living both a coveted dream and a nightmare.

Capote illustrates the tumultuous nature of the novelist's life and career with an exclusive, behind-the-scenes perspective. As the Show Business writer for Time Magazine, Clarke profiled well-known authors in depth. His Capote profile birthed this book. "Truman Capote's struggle with genius and celebrity are captured with brilliant insight in Gerald Clarke's Capote," said Arthur Klebanoff, CEO of RosettaBooks.

Clarke witnessed Capote's unraveling first-hand, especially in the last ten years of his life. He interviewed Capote for hundreds of hours as well as those close to him. As Capote's health deteriorated, and hallucinations took over, Clarke enjoyed the full confidence of his subject.

A section of the biography inspired the 2005 film Capote, for which Phillip Seymour Hoffman won the Best Actor Academy Award. The film covers the years that Capote researched and wrote In Cold Blood. The biography covers Capote's entire life. Clarke spent 13 years writing the book. The result is a vivid portrait of the man whose impact on American literature cannot be underestimated.

According to Clarke, Capote instructed, "I won't respect you unless you tell the whole truth." Clarke presents the fallible Capote but in his full grandeur with compassion and precision.
