In "This Little Light of Mine: A Woman With Down Syndrome Shines Brightly in the World" (published by WestBow Press), Rosemary Heddens recalls the challenges, struggles and abundant rewards that she and her family experienced while raising a child with Down syndrome.

"This Little Light of Mine" provides readers with a glimpse into the life of Kirstin, a woman with Down syndrome. Part of the book is told through Kirstin's owns words. Heddens paints a picture of just how far the world has come in integrating those with special needs into society, as well as how much society has benefited from having their presence so integrated. "It is in no way a how-to book," explains Heddens. "But it does provide insights and life lessons I have learned both as a parent and as a special education teacher."

An excerpt from "This Little Light of Mine":

"There are no easy answers, but the choices we make as parents can enable our children or disable them. The fact is that no matter how much we want to, we can never protect our children from everything. We can't protect them from the loss of a loved one, from accidents or illness, or from natural disasters. In trying to protect them from every rude person they might encounter, or from stressful situations, we aren't really helping them."

Heddens believes readers will be delighted with the happy ending in her story. "Being told that our child has Down syndrome was the most difficult experience we have had to face," she says. "Looking back on it now, 37 years later, I can see that having a child with Down syndrome has made the greatest positive impact on my life and the lives of many others."
