In author Ronald C. Gordon's personal experience, conceiving and executing a serious first novel was followed by the frustrating, painful, and yet frequently absurd attempt to have his work published. This odyssey, fraught with perils including dismissive agents, costly editors-for-hire, mountains of crumpled drafts, and endless revisions, is an experience many aspiring writers can relate to. Now, Gordon tells it all in Don't Tell Me Your Wife Likes It, a candid and comedic account of an author striving to publish his very first novel.

Gordon shares the challenges and joys of writing a first novel, and then the nigh insurmountable obstacles to securing an agent's interest and traditional publication in the contemporary literary marketplace. Don't Tell Me Your Wife Likes It recounts the author's inspiration and development as a novelist, his enthusiasm for both classic and popular fiction, and his response to the conventional wisdom about what does and does not work in novel writing. The book combines personal experience, literary history and analysis, and insightful examination of the contemporary marketplace and the host of self-described mavens and literary "wannabees" Gordon met and dealt with in his struggle to publish. It will certainly resonate with all the frustrated fiction writers out there, as well as anyone interested in how fiction works and the roots of its appeal.

At once trenchant and very funny, Gordon presents a multifaceted and cautionary tale of what it means to be an unknown and unpublished novelist in a blinkered, risk-averse marketplace. Don't Tell Me Your Wife Likes It will appeal to aspirants like the author himself, as it is a sincere and self-aware exploration of what it means to be a writer, and what awaits those who are beginning their own journey into the literary world.
