The 2011 nuclear disaster at the Fukushima facility in Japan left approximately 21,000 residents homeless, says a recent article on The Guardian's website. "For Fukushima's displaced population," says Guardian writer Simon Tisdall, "the effects of the disaster continue to be deeply felt. The evacuation area was subdivided earlier this year into three zones of higher or lower radiation risk. In the worst affected zone, return will not be allowed before 2017 at the earliest."
In his new book, "Button Up: Secrecy and Deception in the Nuclear Fuel Cycle" (published by Trafford Publishing), Dr. Ronald A. Hardert analyzes nuclear disasters such as Fukushima as well as nuclear energy and weapons from a sociological perspective, highlighting the damaging effects of nuclear power plants on their surrounding communities and tracking how other communities are dealing with nuclear secrecy and deception.
"I grew up living near a nuclear weapons plant in Ohio," Hardert recalls. "Neighbors thought the Feed Materials Production Plant was a pet food plant! Family and friends have suffered health effects from radiation leaks over the years."
Written for students and the general public, "Button Up" presents more than research and facts about the dangers of nuclear energy and weapons. Hardert returns to oil, chemical and nuclear disasters such as Chernobyl, Fernald and Fukushima to interview residents affected by the disasters. What emerges is a stunning portrait of local heroes who reach for social justice and take on nuclear secrecy and deception.
"'Button Up' is about personal and community empowerment related to polluting technology," says Hardert. "The role of whistle-blowers and activists is featured in the book."
