In his new book, "Game Ranger: Extracts from a Game Ranger's Notebook" (published by AuthorHouse), author Rodney Henwood draws from 20 years of experience working as a game ranger to share a collection of unique stories and adventures.
"Game Ranger" takes readers into a remote outpost in Zululand, where dangerous game roam free. Based in this isolated region, Henwood spent many years in the bush, helping protect the wildlife that he loved. In the book, he shares accounts of stopping poachers and working to capture and release nearly 2,500 rhinoceroses throughout his career.
An excerpt from "Game Ranger":
"I brought the butt of my rifle into my shoulder, took aim and fired all in one fluid motion. My point of aim was the animal's nose, however I later found out that my first bullet clipped the animal's left cheek and entered at the base of the neck, mushrooming as it entered, causing major trauma in the body. The animal reared up on its hind legs like a horse would do, pawing the air with its outstretched front legs. I instinctively reloaded and fired again from the hip at point blank range, hitting the animal in the middle of the chest with the bullet entering through the rib cage, passing through the heart and coming to rest against the spine."
Henwood has loved wildlife since childhood, and he hopes his enthusiasm to help animals inspires others to follow in his footsteps. "Readers will hopefully walk away from the book with a better understanding of what happens behind the scenes," he says. "It might inspire them to appreciate wildlife more and become better acquainted with present day problems."
