Author Roberto Guerrero was born in the Dominican Republic, the youngest of 10 children. His mother was from St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. He came to the United States in 1969 and graduated from Martin L. King Jr. High School in New York City. Guerrero has worked for the Veterans Administration, including the VA hospital in Gainesville, Fla., since retiring after 22 years of service in the Army. He and his wife, Pauline, married for more than 34 years, have three sons and six grandchildren.
