Robert Mac Kinnon's new book, "U.S. Route 2 - Canada Too!" (published by AuthorHouse) presents a cross country tour through the center of the strange and wonderful North American continent. The U.S. Route 2 town of Rugby, N.D., is in fact the geographic center of the continent. All told, the tour crosses 10 U.S. States, two Canadian Provinces, large parts of the Great Lakes and the three great rivers (the St. Lawrence, the Mississippi, and the Columbia), the Canadian capital of Ottawa and a great variety of places with different details and stories.
The tone is light and the writing includes notes on history, geography, earth forms, religion, monuments, art, industry, personal opinions, gossip and plain old chit-chat. This combination should be a helpful guide for people and families who want to check out locations, make their own plans, drive their own cars or R.V.'s and get a good feel for the history and the land.
"I've always admired the 48 WPA State Guides that were sponsored by the Federal Government and published by the states in the late 1930s and early 1940s," recalls Kinnon. "These have been out of print for a long time, but there are still a lot of us who think these were the best guide and travel books ever printed in America."
An excerpt from "U.S. Route 2 - Canada Too!":
"Sometimes it's healthy to look beyond current events, to take time out to renew our acquaintance with our own land, and to get satisfaction and pride from seeing where we live and who we are. And that's all I'm going to do, look at the country, talk about the background and some of the people, be honest with my opinions, and open with my admiration and sentimentality. I don't have any unifying theories or answers to problems. I just think a celebration is in order."
