ATLANTA

Author Richard D. Ashe collects the writings of multiple Stillman College alumni and those of other historical black colleges and universities in his new motivational self-help book, "Under the Magnolia Tree" (published by AuthorHouse).

In this compilation of prose, poetry, quotations, photography and inspirational writings, Ashe and his fellow alumni paint a picture of the diverse student body and faculty of Stillman College and other HBCUs.

"Although some of the experiences may have been typical or unique on some college campuses, the book is also filled with dramatic, motivational, inspirational and historical themes, photos of yesteryear students and beauty queens," Ashe says. "The personal, humorous and confrontational experiences are breathtaking."

Ashe likens his book to a cake with many ingredients that make up a "delightful and tasteful experience" for readers. Two poems in particular, he says, serve as healing instruments and tributes to those affected by Hurricane Katrina and the murder of 92-year-old Kathryn Johnson by Atlanta police officers during a 2006 drug raid.

"A part of life is learning how to live, give, forgive, learn, educate, motivate, enjoy and share the gifts that we possess," Ashe says. "Therefore, I believe that readers will reflect on each subject in a personal way and be motivated to do something positive."
