MARIETTA, Ohio

While learning about Old Norse literature, Richard A. Davis came to be inspired by one of its sagas, seeing how its themes would fit nicely if told as a western novel. He wrote "The Practical Jokers" (published by Xlibris), a coming-of-age story about friendship and the power of tricks and practical jokes set in the Old West.

Rabbit, a 14-year-old half-Indian lad is being terrorized by the local cowboys. He gets rescued by Stace, a cowboy newly arrived in town, and gets taken under his wing. Stace discovers that the cowboys have not stopped harassing Rabbit - they have simply been skirting around what he'd tolerate, bullying Rabbit as much as they can get away with. In light of this, Stace teaches Rabbit how to stand up for himself and works out a plan to trick the other cowboys into being his friends. The plan succeeds and the other cowboys begin to act as Rabbit's 'big brothers'.

"The Practical Jokers" weaves a story of the Old West and lends it modern relevance in addressing the issue of bullying. Beyond that, it engages readers with a powerful tale of friendship, love and growing up.
