Rex Knowland was a boxer, biker and footballer in Sydney in the early 1970s, but it wasn't as glamorous as it may have seemed. It was there that he began taking drugs recreationally. After graduating college, he travelled to Asia where he developed an addiction to heroin. "To Hell with Smack! Life beyond Heroin Addiction" (published by Balboa Press AU) is Knowland's story about his addiction and eventual recovery.
"I informed the principal person who I attribute to saving my life that I owed him everything," Knowland explains. "His response was that all I owed him was the obligation to 'pass it on.' This is my attempt to honor the gifts he and others passed on to me."
Knowland's addiction became so serious that he even contemplated robbery in order to get his next fix. In 1975, he made the decision to quit and sought help from the Salvation Army, where he got clean. He has since lived a straight and successful life. In the book, he includes some of the key concepts he learned that helped him turn his life around.
By sharing his story, Knowland hopes readers will see: "That no matter how badly you may have fucked up; it does not have to be the end of your life. You can turn it around. You can recover and build a new and better life."
