In his 2012 book "Breaking the Emotional Health Barriers" (published by Balboa Press), which is getting a revived marketing push in 2013, author and practicing family physician Reuben Phiri offers the theory that physical well being is directly associated with emotional health.

"Breaking the Emotional Health Barriers" sheds academic rhetoric, electing to instead use simple, concise descriptions to address the idea that emotions lead to common, everyday illnesses. Phiri connects the dots between common emotional issues such as depression, anxiety and panic attacks to what he calls less obvious emotional diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes, strokes, heart attacks, obesity and others.

An excerpt from "Breaking the Emotional Health Barriers":

"I believe if we lived completely stress-free lives we would fall sick less often and live longer. The key to good health and long life is learning to live a life of no stress - not just happy but completely stress free.

In real life, the healing and repair processes work on a start and stop basis. When we are relaxed and stress free healing and repair go on. In the presence of stress these life-giving processes stop or slow down. In the end, our state of health is the average of how often we are stress free and how often we are stressed."

Phiri hopes his book awakens readers to the idea that they must care for their emotional health as well as their physical health, and that they will see the connections between the two.
