Light pleasance can be felt when reading some poems, while other poems can be haunting and disturbing. The Jumping of the Braids by Reem Hisham Hijjawi is a mixture of both of these feelings as it talks about universal issues, emotions and feelings that touch human's inner most core. This book unleashes thirty-six poems about man's weakness in adhering to God's commands. It talks about love for God, nature, men and women, people, love to improve life and so forth.
When a person is directed toward a lover, one can feel and conclude that God is the one meant to be. Poems like The Dead Sea and The Blob can crack one up from laughing, and poems like Its Cleaning Time and Passion in the Cave can make one wonder why the tyrants do not learn a lesson from history and improve people's lives. Your Honor is a poem that uses symbolism to talk about the history of the Palestinian people who were farmers bombarded by Zionism.
This book combines the East and the West. It is written in English language, but the eastern mentality and way of thinking gave it a special aroma. It is not always that people see life from the same perspective, how about when it is written by a woman who is originally an Arab but have absorbed and lived the western way and adopted it. Some poems on this anthology have a Sufi attribute which makes it more special and unique.
Skillfully written, highly imaginative and extremely interesting, The Jumping of the Braids will definitely excite, inform and entertain readers as it teases their imagination, challenges their intellect, and appeals to their emotions.
