Author Raj Nellooli spent three years in Syria. During that time he developed a deep understanding of the social fabric and people there. The Syrian conflict started dividing the country and its people and he lived through the initial year of the conflict.

Inspired by Syria's culture and the people he knew on both sides of the conflict, Nellooli tells the story of a young man turned mercenary in his new action novel, "King Pawn" (published by Partridge India).

Robert Frost-a college dropout and the son of an American professor and a Syrian mother who fled her home country-has two enemies: the United States Army, for unfairly dismissing him, and the Syrian regime, which destroyed his mother's family in 1982. Pushing him further to the brink, his wife recently left him, taking their two daughters with her.

"King Pawn" follows Robert, as he changes his name to Iftikar, becomes a mercenary and undertakes various missions with the intention of toppling the regime in Syria. While he is at first optimistic about winning back his family with the money he's making, he soon realizes his employers are more devious than he thought. Is Iftikar working to save Syria, or condemning its people to a life of slavery beneath new masters?
