PLYMOUTH, Mich.

The martial art of Balintawak Eskrima is one of the most popular fighting techniques used in the Philippines. Author Rad Maningas learned this technique over the course of many years. He now shares what he learned in his new martial arts book, "Balintawak: Lessons in Eskrima" (published by iUniverse).

Balintawak was first pioneered by Venancio Bacon of Cebu, Philippines, in an attempt to preserve the original nature of Philippine martial arts. One of Bacon's students, Ted Buot, went on to teach Maningas from 1979 to 2006.

In "Balintawak," Maningas presents readers with the history of the martial art, as well as guidance on how to properly utilize the style for self defense. He covers the traditional Balintawak style, in which the rattan stick is utilized, as well as hand-to-hand techniques.

It is Maningas' hope that his book will not only help readers better appreciate and understand this martial art, but also better prepare them for any dangers they may face in life.
