Driven by desperation as her grandmother's sole provider and caregiver, 17-year-old Shannon Baker is now trapped in an elite Anaheim, California, gang and a possessive relationship with its leader. She wants out, but the price may be too high in author Rachel Simion's debut novel, "The 5th Crimson Rose" (published by Archway Publishing).

Shannon is uneasy upon first meeting Derek Knight, but eventually warms to him when he promises to pay her bills and take care of her and her grandmother if she'll swear loyalty to him. It's a welcomed change - until Derek becomes too possessive, and Shannon's suspicions about him and his father's hotel heighten. When a mysterious, tuxedoed man shows up, he might be the answer to her problems, but at what cost?

"I wanted to show an unblemished picture of grace and forgiveness through a generally levelheaded protagonist who made a few bad choices that were out of character for her," Simion says. "That's something we can all relate to in different seasons of our lives. Sometimes our desperation distorts our natural ability to recognize the right help when we need it most."

An excerpt from "The 5th Crimson Rose":
"We don't do anything small, Shannon. There's nothing small about the world you now live in. I told you I wanted to show you a world where you'll have money for whatever you desire. What do you desire, Shannon? Right now at this very moment? Name it, and it's yours."
