'If you love something, set it free; if it comes backs it's yours, if it doesn't, it never was,' is a popular proverb, and the sentiment rings true in new children's book, Tears of the Heart, by R.F. Martin, which is based on real events.
In the book, main character Joanna, a young teacher, rescues a small, helpless and hungry kitten and instantly falls in love. However, due to circumstances out of her control, Joanna must make the difficult decision of letting it go.
Colorfully illustrated and set in a 'Once Upon a Time' setting, Tears of the Heart is written for children but contains themes adults will relate to as well: the heartache that comes from putting a loved one up for adoption.
"It literally brings tears to my eyes whenever I think about the real-life story that Tears of the Heart is based on," said Martin. "The young woman had to make a very difficult decision."
