Social media is one of the most useful innovations that has ever existed. In about a hundred years, humanity has gone from letters and newspaper-that may have had a lesser readership than a successful smoke signaler-to Twitter and Facebook where one can reach an audience of millions in one second.
The best uses for these powerful tools are still being discovered. Whereas some people are happy posting videos of cats playing the piano or yelping about a new restaurant that opened, Susan Ware wants to do an experiment with young people and literature.
Ware has written a new book called "Quest of a Teenage Mystic." In it, 16-year-old Sean Mason and his friends discover that the world is in grave danger due to the growing disconnectedness of humanity. They are pulled into a fantastic world where, to achieve the healing of mankind, they must undergo a serious of tests to prove they are capable of saving the world.
This is where Ware's social media idea comes to life. She has created a website where she invites her readers to submit their own work that will determine the ongoing plot of the trilogy. Ware hopes that young readers will respond to her writing in any artistic medium they choose. She will then compile the submissions to become the second book of the trilogy featured on her website.
"I want this to be a collaboration of the readers," Ware said. "I wrote this book in an attempt to help teens everywhere to deal with their difficult situations and to grow to find their own answers."
Formerly a teacher, Ware has become increasingly concerned with the problems of today's teenagers. Already a difficult time in life, incidences of bullying and self destructive behavior seem to be multiplying everywhere. The author hopes that by collaborating with young people in a shared artistic goal, they might come to share a common vision and work together.
