In an wide-ranging interview with Salon founder, David Talbot, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Chris Hedges says America's vast internal security and surveillance machine is not about fighting terrorism: it's about quelling unrest and discontent in America.

The book Unspeakable: Chris Hedges on the Most Forbidden Topics in America released by Hot Books/ Skyhorse earlier this month, addresses Hedges' years at the New York Times; how New York Times reporters and editors cower and conform to conventional wisdom; the hopeless corruption of the Democratic Party; the criminalization of poverty and how many of the best and brightest in black America are siphoned from school to prison; how the pornography industry reflects the most dehumanizing qualities of global capitalism; and climate change.

Hedges warns that global elites are not making best efforts to curb the fossil fuel industry and limit overconsumption. "They are servants of global capitalism," he tells Talbot. "They will continue to siphon off trillions of dollars and direct scientific and technical expertiseexpertise that should be directed toward preparing for environmental catastrophe and investing in renewable energy to wage endless wars and consolidate corporate power."

Chris Hedges is a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, the New York Times bestselling author of Days of Destruction, Days of Revolt, and War Is a Force That Gives Us Meaning, and a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award for Nonfiction. He was a New York Times foreign correspondent for fifteen years, covering wars across the world. David Talbot is the author of the New York Times bestseller The Devil's Chessboard: Allen Dulles, the CIA, and the Rise of America's Secret Government. He is the founder and former editor in chief of Salon.
