Life may offer both the sweet and the sour, but only savored together can we experience the full flavor of each.

In her new book Lemon Pie, psychologist Dr. Amelia Jo Mitchell invites readers to reflect on their experiences and behaviors to determine if they are content with the life they're living.

"Life, with its ups and downs, holds great promise for us," says Mitchell. "What we nourish ourselves with will determine not only who we become, but the tenor of the world we live in."

Presented in two-to-four-page vignettes, Lemon Pie equips readers with insight into everything from communicating with others to increasing self-esteem to living a purposeful daily life.

Mitchell, who has worked with clients adjusting to diverse hurdles like chronic illness, incarceration or military life, encourages each person to take responsibility for his or her actions.

Lessons come from unlikely places like the behaviors of an armadillo, the magic number in relationships and the Native American talking stick to teach about defense mechanisms, balance and the art of listening.
