In a great ocean storm, the patrol craft floated light as a cork in a bottle and rough as a riding bull, disappearing in the large waves of a hurricane.
The deceased Lt. Paul W. Neidhardt sent over 115 heartfelt and reassuring letters to his wife and toddler over the years of WWII. The story of his travels unfolds through these letters as he endures the fury of the sea, published for the first time in the book Poseidon and the PC by his son, Gary Neidhardt.
"Through his letters, my father helped keep my mother and sister's hope intact while enduring some of Mother Nature's fiercest challenges, while I was able to retrace far more than just family history," said Neidhardt. "Long before 'PC' became equated with 'personal computer' or 'politically correct,' the two letters stood for 'patrol craft.' These rough-riding, diminutive ships were relatively safe from an enemy sub or plane because there were always better targets nearby."
It is on one of those ships that Lt. Neidhardt faced the power of Typhoon Louise and survived. Typhoon Louise occurred on October 9th, 1945, prior to what had been the planned invasion date of Japan.
"It sank, grounded, and damaged hundreds of ships," said Neidhardt. "Had the war not ended before this natural disaster, the Allied invasion would have been delayed significantly."
As a history enthusiast himself, Neidhardt hopes to share with the world a little-known event surrounding WWII with his book. 'Poseidon and the PC' is filled with historical insight from a sailor who faced the fury of Typhoon Louise in person and lived.
