Author Polly Brewer blends historical fiction with real-life details in her unique new book, "Sometimes I Can See You..." (published by AuthorHouse).

Brewer's tale is filled with characters that she's known and some that she's never met. "Sometimes the past is clear and when it isn't I have made it up but remain faithful to what truths I do know," she explains.

Themes of loss, love and achievement are interwoven throughout the stories in "Sometimes I Can See You..." As the book progresses, pictures of strong but vulnerable women emerge. Many times they're reacting to the men in their lives, sometimes disastrously but often with resilience as they work to rebuild their lives.

"I also pose the question, 'What was it like when we were all younger?'" Brewer explains. "There emerges a saga of one luminous if imperfect life at a time, converging with my own deeply felt present, so full of its own memories."

An excerpt from "Sometimes I Can See You...":

"These Sierra foothills where I am today are not really in the middle of nowhere; its pristine location just makes it seem that way. But even the journey is unexpected because one quickly leaves flat Fresno to climb and wind up a beautiful rocky narrow hilly road, rife with vegetation and occasional breath taking vistas. With the brisk change in height as we go, ordinary cares are left behind."
