Offering a glimpse into the life of celebrated aerial photographer, Robert B. Haas, "Miracle Man: 100 Days with Oliver" is a poignant journey of medical miracles and undying friendship between the author and his beloved dog. When the fourteen-year-old mixed breed with virtually no sight, tumbles down an embankment and is paralyzed in his back legs, it is the author, Bobby Haas, who is blindsided by the most grievous emotional wound.
Faced with the dreaded prospect of "putting Oliver Down" Haas refuses to give up on his best friend. At the bedside of a barely-conscious Oliver, Haas pleads for just 100 more days together. In exchange the author promises one day they will return to Oliver's favorite haunt in the Caribbean, to walk the beach together again.
This beautiful tale of unconditional love reveals intimate details about Haas and his own crises. "Miracle Man" is laced with suspense, humor and the musings of a man whose best friend leaves an indelible paw-print on the landscape of his complex life. It's as much a journey of self-discovery for the author as it is one of helping Oliver along the road of recovery. Not just for animal lovers, "Miracle Man" will resonate with anyone who has waded through tough times and somehow made it to the other side.
The Humane Society of the United States will include copies of "Miracle Man: 100 Days With Oliver" in gift bags given at its annual Genesis Awards festivities in Los Angeles, March 19, 2011. The gala pays tribute to the major news and entertainment media for producing outstanding works that raise public awareness of animal issues. Haas is donating books for all the attendees, including 50 signed copies for celebrity guests.
