It's not easy to face painful, subliminal truths when a relationship becomes emotionally and mentally abusive. This new book explores one woman's transformation from victim to survivor as she finds the courage to break free of her abusive husband despite three decades of turmoil.

In "Invisible Truths," the author relays the story of Mary Beth Billingsgate, who is abused by her husband, Troy, even before their wedding vows. She falls in love with the handsome charmer in college when he genuinely needs her care, as he suffered with a cyclical, debilitating malady. He begins to show his true colors as their relationship deepens - first demanding she get rid of possessions he thinks former boyfriends gifted to her, and later, dictating when and where she works. His attitude improves briefly when they become parents, but he soon reverts to his old hurtful habits. A beautiful intern becomes a brief distraction, but soon Mary Beth becomes Troy's target of criticism and unwarranted treatment again.

Hurtful demands - each one more outrageous than the last - soon erode any semblance of a true marriage. Mary Beth becomes adept at hiding the pain Troy inflicts, although his belittling comments always trigger her desire to flee. Eventually, his domineering ways affect their sons as well. It's not until a trio of events occur that Mary Beth finds the courage to do what she should have done years before. This compelling account is a call to action for female victims to stop making excuses for someone else's mistreatment of them and to find the help they need to escape the invisible truths of abuse that do nothing but inflict pain.

Author Perri Bergen teaches composition and literature courses and is a professional writing tutor at a SUNY community college in Upstate New York. The research and Modern Language Association specialist has also written six children's picture books that are being illustrated and prepared for publication. Bergen, who has lived in Europe and throughout the USA, wears many hats. She is a voiceover artist, model and freelance greeting card writer. She and her pit bull, Max, live in Cicero.
