WASHINGTON, Nov. 18, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ Children from low-income families can receive three times more books this holiday season, thanks to a partnership between the nonprofit social enterprise First Book and Penguin Young Readers. For every $2.50 donated to First Book through December 31, 2015, Penguin Young Readers will provide an in-kind donation of two additional books, up to 500,000 books, for a total of three books going to children in need.
First Book promotes educational equality by providing educators and program leaders serving children in need with access to free and affordable high-quality new books and educational resources. The organization works with publishers to secure large quantities of new children's books and learning resources, which are then made available to the classrooms and programs it supports. To date, First Book has distributed more than 135 million books in the U.S. and Canada.
Those interested in sharing the joy of reading with kids in need this holiday season can make a gift to First Book at firstbook.org/donate. Penguin Young Readers will match gifts made to First Book through the end of the year.
"There's no greater gift for a child than a book," said Kyle Zimmer, president and CEO of First Book. "Thanks to the tremendous generosity of our friends at Penguin Young Readers, three times as many books can reach the hands of young readers. We're grateful that they have stepped up to give kids in need a brighter holiday season and brighter futures."
The books made available to First Book by Penguin Young Readers will be provided to children in need through First Book's network of over 200,000 educators and program leaders across the country.
