Through the eyes of a former class clown, Paul Phillips's new book, "Along the Way: Short Stories: Humor and Challenges" (published by Archway Publishing), follows the life of a man through humorous, thought-provoking and poignant first-person stories.

A collection of 24 independent short memoirs, "Along the Way" shows the resilience of an investment manager, husband and father. Phillips' book includes humorous recollections of learning to type at sixty, fending off offers of intimate female companionship from a salesman in Japan, and of spontaneously buying a time-share apartment. Other pieces such as Sleeping Over Hiroshima, The Right Cross, Pensacola, and a Samurai in Peacetime describe challenging predicaments.

Phillips records a wide gamut of his life's memorable experiences for the purposes of making readers laugh and to provoke thinking.

An excerpt from the short story "A Real Japanese Weekend" in "Along the Way":

"There to greet us at the door were his wife, a petite woman with a beautiful face, and his mother probably in her late fifties. A grinning six -year-old boy and a cute four-year-old girl joined the welcoming committee.

"After the introductions, Toshio repeated, 'This will be a real Japanese weekend. The first thing you do is take a bath.'"
