As a loosely historical tale, "When Pigs Flew" (published by iUniverse) brings to life the action, humor and heartache of a secret mission in Vietnam as recounted in war stories of Paul Cardinal's father. The book will be featured at the 2014 California Library Association event in Oakland, California from Nov. 7-9.

Pete Cardinal is a six-foot lieutenant with the voice of John Wayne. For 19 years he has been launching planes into the air and picking up the pieces when they fall from the sky. He's hoping for an easy last year in the Navy until someone else's mistake redirects him to Vietnam.

Now it's his job to load obsolete seaplanes with weapons they were never meant to carry so pilots like Psycho and Jerry can attempt a mission that has little chance of success. Readers will follow Pete as he bids his family goodbye and heads for a bay in Vietnam where Operation Market Time springs into action.

With Pete's time in the Navy counting down, he has one last mission. The brass sees it as severing Vietnamese supply lines; he sees it as staying alive 'til retirement.
