Based on 30 years of teaching, including 18 years experience as a kindergarten teacher, "Hop On: As the Journey Begins" by Patty Nelson includes illustrated ideas and projects to teach kindergartners how to love learning and build their self confidence.
"Hop On" is the first of a series of four books that help take teachers through the entire school year with ideas, crafts and activities to make learning fun. The book includes pages that can be copied from the book and used as worksheets for the students in the classroom.
With curriculum created by Nelson and art by her sister in law C. C. Smith, the activities in this book aim to create a rewarding and memorable school year for teachers and students.
"I believe kindergarten, and more specifically the first two weeks of school, is extremely important because teachers 'set the stage' for their students' education," Nelson said. "By making learning fun for students they become enthusiastic about their education and the lessons learned will carry over into their behavior later in life."
Nelson shares teaching methods and ideas with other teachers. The methods are simple and effective and strive to create a classroom atmosphere that makes learning exciting and explain how to minimize discipline in the classroom.
Nelson's book also helps teachers make a difference in the lives of students by promoting life skills such as interest in others and self-confidence. She believes these skills will help students' make a difference in society.
"Teaching is one of the most wonderful and rewarding careers anyone could have," Nelson said. "I still get notes and letters from some of my former students who have graduated from high school and college thanking me for "setting the stage" for their education."
