The new book "Are You In a Pickle?: Lessons Learned Along The Way: Students' Performance And Achievement Gaps" (published by AuthorHouse), by author Patricia L. Pickles, Ph.D., makes a compelling case for systemic education reform, teaching to national standards and providing all students with opportunities that will help them be successful beyond high school in the real world.

"In spite of the growing number of students living in poverty, and in spite of the growing number of failing schools across the country, we can, wherever we choose, provide quality education to all of our students," says Pickles. The proven techniques, strategies and tactics in "Are You In a Pickle?" are based on research, experience and results. The author also cites obstacles and barriers which can undermine individuals and disable success.

An excerpt from "Are You In a Pickle?":

"I entered the field of education because I was one of those children in an at-risk situation, and I know what it takes to climb from the bottom of the mountain to the top. I know that it can be done, and I want to give back to those who need someone to believe in them, their abilities, and their worth. After all, my career was based on the backs of my ancestors and the shoulders of our democracy."

"With the re-authorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act under the microscope and the Common-Core Standards rising to the forefront, there are still a significant number of schools classified as 'failing' or 'underachieving,'" Pickles says. "It is important now, more than ever before, to act on evidence-based-practices, for students, teachers, and educational leaders."
