It is not surprising that a pastor would pray for others. What is surprising is that sometimes pastors need others to pray for them, notes the Rev. Joe Kutter, who began posting short prayers for pastors on the American Baptist Ministers Council's Facebook page. This new book features a collection of some of those prayers, inspired by Kutter's work as executive director of the American Baptist Ministers Council and his own experiences as a pastor.

"Praying for Ministers" features inspirational prayers created by Kutter, known as a pastor to pastors, who prays that ministers will find personal and vocational wholeness, and keep their faithfulness and fruitfulness in accepting God's call. Short introductions for each petition set the stage for prayers that aim to provide support, comfort and faith. Kutter's messages ask for God's help with reminding pastors about the importance of their own families, harnessing the power of friends, and handling the emotions of Graduation Sunday.

After meeting other American Baptist ministers, Kutter realized his prayer postings were making a difference in lifting up his Brothers and Sisters in Christ. Others share that opinion. "In this collection of prayers, (Joe) poured out his heart and soul. He captured the everyday journey, making ministers human and real," writes the Rev. Liliana Da Valle, former executive with the American Baptist Churches of Rhonde Island, calling the book "an oasis of encouragement in a wandering desert."

Author Joe Kutter served as pastor for 39 years in five congregations before becoming executive director of the American Baptist Ministers Council. Kutter, the son of a minister, served as both solo pastor and leader of pastoral colleagues in a variety of settings ranging from a small city to urban neighborhoods. He and his wife, Peggy, have been married for 43 years and have four children and seven grandchildren.
