PW Brisley, a teacher and principal at various schools for more than 40 years, has seen his share of children picking on each other. But one occurrence in particular stood out to him: children laughing at a classmate for feeling sadness at the death of a mouse. Brisley resolved the situation by explaining to the children that all creatures, regardless of their size, are important to the world. Brisley was so moved by this experience that he put his pen to the page and began writing a work of juvenile fiction.

Brisley now invites young readers to enjoy his new children's book "Fred's the Star: A Tale of Friendship and Survival in the Dales" (published by Partridge Singapore), which chronicles the journey of a field mouse and his newfound friends.

Fred, a field mouse, is the only member of his family to survive the brutal winter. While nibbling at a piece of apple core near a stone wall he calls home, he sees a large shadowy figure. Out of the shadows emerges Bertie, a large English badger.

Together, Fred and Bertie must learn to embrace teamwork as they struggle to find a new home. Along the way they will encounter natural dangers and foes and make new friends.

An excerpt from "Fred's the Star":

"Despite his best intentions, Fred did fall asleep about an hour after he returned to his nest. He had been thinking of what had happened since the previous evening and though he was really worried about Bertie knew he couldn't do anything at night apart from wait for his safe return. As exhaustion crept up on him he also thought that probably Bertie would wake him when he did come back so he turned away from his entrance and before he could think; let alone say, 'Fred's whiskers'; he was curled up asleep on his bedding."
