Butterfield Books Inc. recently updated the book Planting Dreams by Kansas author Linda K. Hubalek for National Women's History Month. This book chronicles the author's ancestor, Christina Charlotta Johnson's decision to leave Sweden and her family's travel across the United States to the Kansas prairie.
"Can you imagine making the decision to leave your home, parents, and friends forever? You've decided to leave your native country and move to America, but how do you get there, where are you going to live? How would you travel and survive in 1868-not 2013-when now you'd have constant help through your smartphone?" said Linda K. Hubalek.
While researching Planting Dreams, Hubalek found Swedish church records through a LDS Family History Center that documented when her Swedish ancestors left Sweden, and traced their trail through America to their final destination. She also found out her great great grandmother Johnson was pregnant on the journey, gave birth in Illinois, before traveling on to Kansas.
"Women's History Month is important to recognize and read about the women that immigrated to America and shaped its history," said Hubalek. "My books show the feelings and responsibilities these immigrant women had to go through to insure the preservation of their family, and a legacy for future generations."
For more information about the woman's role in immigration and homesteading, please be sure to read Linda K. Hubalek's historical pioneer books, Planting Dreams, Cultivating Hope, Harvesting Faith. These books (also in ebook form) are available in stores or online at Amazon.com, BN.com, or ButterfieldBooks.com.
