OUT OF DARKNESS Records Collected Stories & Works of Pastor

After the death of her husband Pastor Willis Goodwin, it occurred to Eartha Goodwin, with her two sons in agreement, that a good way to keep his memory among family and friends, and among many whom he adored, was to record the work he did in developing Johns Island and to share stories about him and by him. So she, in this compilation, has set about to collect his work and stories in a volume entitled Out Of Darkness.

Willis Goodwin lived an exemplary life as the Methodist preacher of Easley Charge, Johns Island. Composed of three churches, Goodwin's ministry was not strictly reserved for preaching the Word to his flock. Often times, Eartha Goodwin was witness to the many ways that a preacher is made use of by his community. It was all a burden that Goodwin happily submitted to, and this made him a pillar in that community in Johns Island.

Eartha and Willis Goodwin spent a happy forty-seven years together. These were eventful years which Mrs. Goodwin remembers as being filtered with good and bad times. Through the years, Willis accumulated a fund of works and stories which family, friends, and people on the island will remember. They also had, in that long journey, met, had the advice and assistance of many "enablers." It is because of these individuals that they reached higher heights and were successful in many endeavors. Ultimately, it was the hand of God working out the work that they were meant to fulfill on this earth. Willis Goodwin worked and worked gratefully for the greater glory of the Lord.

About the Author
Besides pastoring, Willis Goodwin enjoyed participating in many other organizations. He was a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., Eastern Light Lodge #259, the NAACP, Black Methodists for Church Renewal, United Methodist Renewal Fellowship, Agricultural Missions, South Carolina Commission for Farm Workers, Charleston Housing Authority (cofounder), and was a special assistant to Congressman Mendel Davis. He served as senior advisor for African/Caribbean Affairs at the South Carolina World Trade Center in Charleston and was appointed in 2002 to the South Carolina Commission of Human Affairs.
