Ann Arbor, MI
According to The U.S Census Bureau, in 2011 there were more than 13.7 million single parents in the United States, which accounted for 26% of all households.
O. Henderson, Jr., was raised by a single mother and studied the migration of African-Americans through the 1900s. His new novel, "Light in Winter," follows the post-civil war movement of African-Americans that lasted for more than 100 years, and the powerful women that helped them survive.
"Light in Winter" follows the path of one family as they move from Missouri to New Jersey to Michigan and beyond in search of work and security. Henderson's central character, Babe-Ruth, becomes the tree of life for her family after they are abandoned. She refuses to raise them on welfare while leading them through changing times.
"I grew up in a time of great change," Henderson said. "Despite the struggles, my mother remained a beacon of hope and strength that allowed my siblings and I to grow into successful adults."
Henderson retells American history through the lens of a racially mixed community, meant to inspire single parents everywhere as they take on the challenges of parenthood in difficult times.
