About the Author
Sylvia Kleiman Fields grew up in Brooklyn, N.Y. and began a nontraditional career path in nursing in the 1950s, armed with a bachelor's degree in nursing from Adelphi College. While teaching, she pursued graduate studies at Columbia University and earned a doctorate in education in 1977, focusing on inter-professional education. At SUNY Stony Brook, Fields earned a medical school certificate and co-authored "Guide to Patient Evaluation" with J.L. Sherman, M.D. Later she taught both nurses and physicians, directed a health mission for uninsured and conducted research on collaboration in health care. She helped develop the "Jefferson Scale of 'Physician Empathy'' studied worldwide. She lives on Skidaway Island, Ga., and serves on the Institutional Review Board at Memorial Medical Center/Mercer University.
