Novel 'Beyond the Scars' Centers on Terrorist Bombing in Kenya Image On August 7th, 1998, a truck entered the rear entrance of the U.S. embassy in Nairobi, Kenya, carrying a bomb. It exploded at approximately 10:35 a.m., killing 224 people and injuring about 4,650 people, according to CNN. Author David Franklyn, who was in Nairobi at the time, recalls the attack vividly and spoke with many people who witnessed it.

In his novel, “Beyond the Scars: A Novel Set Against the Background of the 1998 U.S. Embassy in Nairobi” (published by AuthorHouse UK), Franklyn reaches out to trauma victims through an engaging story of redemption and overcoming loss.

“The event of the U.S. embassy bombing serves as background to the subject and themes of the novel,” Franklyn says. “Many of the events described are real and real characters are used fictionally.”

Set in Nairobi some time after the bombing, “Beyond the Scars” artfully renders the disturbance left behind after the attack. Told from the perspective of a young man, the story centers on the narrator and his wife – who loses her niece and friend in the attack. In an attempt to heal herself, the narrator’s wife camps out at the bomb site. Her husband tries desperately to understand his wife’s pain and rescue her from her grief.

“Beyond the Scars” pays tribute to the victims of the Nairobi attack and keeps their memories alive. Franklyn’s goal for his book is to make his readers more aware of the value of human life. He also stresses the importance of self-healing and family to his readers.
