SAN ANTONIO
Author Ebony Aiken makes her literary debut with the publication of her new young adult novel, "A Ray of Hope" (published by Archway Publishing).
When 15-year-old Essence Imani Harris' parents are deployed to Afghanistan, her whole life is uprooted. She and her siblings must move from San Antonio to Mississippi to live with their aunt and uncle. Acting brave though she's unsure of her new home, Essence - CeCe to her friends - puts on a brave face for her siblings and draws close to her aunt.
The household, however, is stressful. Cece's aunt desperately wants a child, though she may be infertile. CeCe holds tight to her faith in Jesus Christ to see her family through, but when death and loss strike the family, CeCe must find the strength within herself to pull her family together and move on from the hurt and pain.
Aiken wrote the first draft of "A Ray of Hope" when she was 15, which gives the book its unique voice. She hopes to offer both entertainment and comfort to those young adults going through trials similar to CeCe's.
"I want readers to know that no matter your age, life will give everyone challenging times," Aiken says, "but it is how you cope with different situations that makes your character."
