Today's society is dominated by a fear of outsiders. It is an "us vs. them" mentality that oftentimes stops individuals from helping their fellow man. Ruth Callick holds true in her belief that assisting others is a more favorable and satisfying approach. She exemplifies this line of thinking with her new novel "Run from a Shadow."

Set in 1969, "Run from a Shadow" follows two young children as they search for safety, security and home. Abounded in the airport of a foreign country, youngsters Cortney and Chenin approach an unsuspecting woman named "Casey Hammond." The children, who are searching for their uncle, ask Casey for her assistance getting to a nearby town.

She obliges, but doesn't realize that in doing so, she has put her own life at risk. Soon, foreign nationals pursue the children fleeing from their soviet-run country. Casey's efforts to protect the children come in conflict with Keir, the children's older cousin who is looking to rescue the children as well. Along the way, Casey becomes attached to the children - and their attractive protector.

"Many people are afraid to help strangers because they believe doing so will leave them vulnerable for a painful experience," Callick said. "Run from a Shadow shows you why the opposite is true. By aiding and assisting others, you create bonds of friendship and a love that can combat any danger."
