Unable to face the thought of another few years of law school and years of stress as a young lawyer,
Harry Mann makes a dramatic career choice. But his first day as a teacher proves to be anything but welcoming. A new book by Hugh Bachman, released by Dog Ear Publishing, stars Harry, his colleagues and a cast of unforgettable students.
"Please Don't Tell Mum that I Have Become a Government School Teacher – She Thinks I'm Still at Law School" follows the first two years of Harry's new career at Cutler High School, a run-down building with teachers that seem just as run down. The story contains elements of reality that that often exist in government school systems everywhere.
Harry works to learn how to deal with his disruptive students, many whom have been dealt an unlucky hand in life. Whether it is the ineffective principal who has an embarrassing incident with an EpiPen, the student who falls in love on an excursion to the maximum security prison or the unexpected victory in a legal skills competition against a prestigious private school, all in all, it's two years of his life that Harry will never forget.
John Hattie, professor of education and director of the Melbourne Education Research Institute at the University of Melbourne, writes that the book "will lead to tears of laughter and sadness. A must read for teachers, parents and anyone with skin in the education game."
Bachmann is a management consultant who works to help organizations improve their performance and realize their goals. Bachman once served as a teacher in the Teach for Australia program but now focuses on rapid large-scale school system reform efforts. This has taken him to far-flung parts of the world including the Northern Territory in Australia and Punjab in Pakistan. He enjoys spontaneous travel, old books and writing. All proceeds from the book will be donated to charity.
