New Novel Explores How Culture Impacts Morals

Ian McKay Nunn has long studied the use of culture's effect on its participants and how societal norms shape an individual. History is often marked by the abuse of cultural influences, so that the elite of society can remain in power. Nunn explores this concept with his first novel "The Chronicle of the Ostmen: Book One: Maelstrom."

"The Chronicle of the Ostmen" shares the life of a privileged young nobleman, Mael MacConail. MacConail is not concerned with religion or God's plans for his life; however, his world is turned upside down when the monastery is raided by Danish settlers - the Ostmen. He is taken hostage and forced to live in a foreign country and adapt to an unfamiliar culture. Caught in the middle of a war between the Danish and the British kingdom, Mael is compelled to discover his true convictions and decide where his loyalties lie - with the Danish or the British.

"This is a coming of age story that really highlights the struggle to accept or reject cultural norms that are thrust upon us," Nunn said. "The Chronicle of the Ostmen really explores how society impacts our individual values and ideals and how does society use their cultural constructs to rule over people."

About the author
Ian McKay Nunn has been a student of art and culture for over 40 years. As an infant, his Scottish parents immigrated to a land of opportunity in the Antipodes in search of a better life. Ian draws his inspiration from his experiences living and growing in a foreign land with differing cultures. "The Chronicle of the Ostmen" is the first book in an intended series. Nunn currently lives in New South Wales, Australia.
