Before Howard retires as a successful factory owner, he fires close to a hundred men from one of his factories, replacing them with robots to improve profitability. But when one of his former workers commits suicide, Howard soon finds himself mired in guilt. Howard decides to form a group of three experts to investigate how the intrusion of AI on daily life. When his team uncovers a series of disclosed AI threats unknown to the general public, Howard makes it his mission to inform the masses.
Though the book is fiction, Zahr stresses there are equivalent real-life threats in the world today, including addiction to mobile phones and tablets. "Be aware of your choices when you use hand devices," says Zahr. "Put pressure on government to halt the development of dangerous AI systems (and) apply new rules and regulations."
