New Novel Captures the Rewards and Dangers of Ranch Life

In "Always There is the Mountain," Kalli Deschamps introduced readers to the Lanvin family and their Montana ranch. In the 60s, the group hopes to adapt from their urban surroundings to their new rural lifestyle. Unfortunately, the city life follows them as their new home is threatened by an expanding metropolitan.

The Lanvin family was able to save their "Lolo Peak" ranch and community but their story is far from over. Deschamps continues the Lanvin's journey with "Beyond the Mountain."

"Beyond the Mountain" takes place 40 years after the events of "Always There is the Mountain," featuring the same family and the same ranch. New tragedies plague them and their overall well-being. Two young officers are assigned to guard the Lavin relatives and their property, providing a ray of light in these dark times. The family must learn the importance of loving those around them and appreciating the ranching livelihood.

"I have lived and worked on a ranch for much of my adult life and my goal is to bring a piece of that lifestyle to readers," Deschamps said. "Beyond the Mountain shows an in-depth look at the struggles ranchers might face and how a love for that lifestyle and its people can overcome any of those setbacks."

After many years of moving between Arizona and Montana, Kalli Deschamps has made a permanent move to southern Arizona. Her life as a teacher and professional artist has prepared her to chronicle life in the contemporary west. A trip to Montana during her sixteenth summer was the beginning of a love affair with the state. The admiration was never lost. It's reflected in her education at Montana State University, her marriage to a Montanan, and her subsequent careers.
