BALDWIN, N.Y.
People who meet author Andre Donegan often called him an inspiration. Despite being born a congenital quadriplegic amputee, meaning he has no legs and arms only down to his elbows, Donegan remains positive in all aspects of his life.
His new memoir, "Overcoming Obstacles: When One Door Closes, Another One Opens" (published by Inspiring Voices), shares his incredible story of growing up in a hospital and the loving family that took him into their hearts.
Born without legs and with arms that ended at the elbow, Donegan was given up as a toddler by his biological mother, hospitalized for years as a child and adopted by a loving Caucasian woman with eight children of her own. This incredible act of compassion - as well as his adoptive mother's "tough love," helped forge an unquenchable desire on Donegan's part to excel, achieve and love.
Throughout his book, Donegan conveys the message that a disability does not define a person. He hopes people will learn to see past people's disabilities and appreciate them for the true spirits within.
