During World War II, author Dale J. Satterthwaite crossed paths with Joseph Heller, the eventual author of the critically acclaimed novel, "Catch-22." Satterthwaite and Heller served together in the 340th Bomb Group in Italy and Corsica, the group that would later inspire Heller's novel. Now Satterthwaite releases his own memoir of war, "Truth Flies with Fiction" (published by Archway Publishing), a collection of journal entries, photographs and letters from Satterthwaite's time during the war and his subsequent traveling.

"Truth Flies with Fiction" takes readers across Europe and into the Middle East, recreating the dramatic events of World War II he witnessed. Satterthwaite recounts the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, depicting its extensive damage on the camp, and recalls the terror of a Luftwaffe night raid, which resulted in the loss of many Allied lives.

The book takes a humanistic approach to war, focusing on the fears and longings Satterthwaite felt. He includes his personal photographs of the destruction, crisis and loss of life. The letters between Satterthwaite and his fiancé add romance and showcase the feelings of longing that plagued many soldiers who had loved ones back home.

Through his book, Satterthwaite challenges readers' perspectives of soldiers and reveals the humanity of mankind. He hopes readers will appreciate the historic and personal aspects of his journey.
