CYPRUS
Nandita Jhaveri-Menon shares a touching memoir of the incredible life and travels of Hélène Zulgadar in the new book, "The Fourth Wife of Aliyar Bey" (published by AuthorHouse UK).
Hélène Zulgadar recalls her life, growing up in Paris as the child of émigré parents, then as the wife of an officer in the Foreign Legion, and lastly as the wife of Aliyar Bey, with Nandita Jhaveri-Menon as her amanuensis. It is a moving memoir peopled with memorable characters, bears who consume tobacco and dogs that take the tramcar home.
Zulgadar 's account is full of nostalgia for fallen worlds, including the one left behind by her parents after the Bolsheviks took over - a world she never knew - as well as the one to which she could not return after the ouster of the Shah in 1979.
Jhaveri-Menon captures Zulgadar's musings as she moves through North Africa, finds herself stranded on the Côte Azur, eventually takes the desert route across Iraq to Iran and ends up in Teheran running a restaurant.
"The Fourth Wife of Aliyar Bey" is a portrait of bygone societies and worlds which the author feels will never be regained, and the story of a courageous life.
