Beginning in the small, rural town of Liberty, North Carolina, the book presents the story of the first time James experienced another culture, and how he began to search for his true self-identity and meaning in life as he grew toward maturity. James recounts numerous experiences that inspired him to commit his life to a career in world missions, serving various countries around the world. In total, it shares 61 years of service, including 55 years in overseas, filled with "immeasurable joy, satisfaction, and peace of mind and heart."
"I want readers to know that serving anywhere brings great joy and satisfaction and that one can survive and thrive in some of the most difficult circumstances," James says. "I want them to know that living cross-culturally is exciting, challenging, and rewarding when we follow simple principles of adjusting and adopting new cultures and friends. I want them to know that God can take any person from any kind of background, poverty or wealth, urban or rural, small town or metropolis, and mold that life into the vessel that uniquely fits God's purposes."
