Author Lotus Tran grew up in a small village, Qui Nhon, in South Vietnam. As a young girl, she imagined the jungle as a place full of wonder and believed the flashing lights and explosions she saw were dragons fighting. When she stepped into the jungle, the dream of the jungle as a paradise will be shattered. "In the Heart of the Jungle: A Young Girl's Survival of the Vietnam War" (published by iUniverse) is Tran's memoir of perseverance in the face of war.

As the Vietnam War begins, she sees some things that are peculiar to her - white men with red hair, camouflage face paint and African American soldiers. Most of what she sees, however, horrifies her. The sounds of gunfire and mortar shells are only interrupted by the screams of the dying. As she travels through the jungle, she narrowly escapes the grasp of the Viet Cong and bears witness to more than she ever imagined while avoiding booby traps, land mines and even wild animals.

An excerpt from "In the Heart of the Jungle":

"Without hesitation, my mother ran to a corner and gathered some personal belongings while the rest of us stood in silent and scared. We watched her shoving our belongings up in the chimney. Not wanting the enemies to eat our food, my brother and I devoured our meals in two or three scopes of our hands. Who needed chopsticks right now? Then, we heard explosions around our place and soon gunfire. Horrifying screams let us know that the bullets had found their targets. The VCs would soon be upon us."

"In the Heart of the Jungle" is a memoir with a unique perspective from a child who witnessed and survived the violence and tragedy of the Vietnam War.
